Cortical Onlay Grafting
Cortical onlay grafting involves taking cortical bone which is the dense outer portion of all bones and attaching it to an area to be grafted. The bone must be secured (usually with a titanium screw) because movement would cause failure.
Cortical onlay bone graft material is usually obtained from the patient (autograft). The common donor sites are lateral mandible, chin, hip, and cranium. It can also be obtained from donor’s bone but this has no living tissue in it.
