Post-Cancer Resection Reconstruction
Oral and pharyngeal cancer may require removal (resection) of part of the jaw bone. Reconstruction may be necessary to restore chewing, swallowing speaking and facial contours. In these cases reconstruction is done by various methods. Often these involve interim stages using reconstruction plates to maintain residual bone position followed by secondary stages of bone grafting and finally placement of implants for dental restoration. Each case is unique because each resection is unique. The reconstruction of cancer resection patients is a challenging but rewarding endeavor.
