Split Ridge & Ridge Widening
Ridge widening is a procedure to widen the alveolar ridge in order to place implants. Often the pattern of atrophy in the ridge leads to what is known as a knife edged ridge. Alternatively the ridge can have a somewhat hourglass shape. In these cases widening of the ridge with or without bone grafting can be accomplished. The procedure involves flapping back the gingiva, creating osteotomies in the bone then widening the bone cuts with a series of larger osteotomies. In some special cases the procedure can be done without flapping back the gingiva. This flapless procedure results in no sutures being needed.
